Sophie Farrar, 82-70 Austin Street, Kew Gardens, called as a witness in behalf of the People, and after being duly sworn, testified as follows:

Direct examination by Mr. Cacciatore:
Q. Now, Miss Farrar, how long have you lived at 82-70 Austin Street?
A. Eight years.
Q. I'm sorry.
A. Eight years.
The Court: Eighteen years?
The Witness: Eight years.
Q. Now that address that you have indicated, 82-70 Austin Street, is that on Austin Street, or the rear of Austin Street?
A. That's on Austin Street.
Q. Well, you don't get in from Austin Street, do you?
A. No.
Q. You get in from the rear, is that so?
A. Yes.
Q. By the way, how many apartments on your floor?

A. Two.
Q. Are there any other apartments?
A. No.
Q. Who occupied the other apartment?
A. Kitty Genovese and her roommate, Mary Ann Zielonko.
Q. Now, during the early morning of March 13, 1964, did you hear something?
A. Yes, I did.
Q. Tell us what you heard.
A. I heard a scream.
Q. Now, your windows face on Austin Street, is that so?
A. Yes.
Q. And did you look out the window?
A. Yes, I did.
Q. Well, did you open your window, first?
A. No, I didn't open it. I stood near the window and I looked. I saw nothing, and then I listened and I didn't hear anything, and I went back to bed.
Q. All right, some time later, did something happen?
A. Yes.
Q. How long - how much later?
A. Well, not too long, because I wasn't sleeping.
Q. Minutes?
A. About 15 minutes, I'd say - approximately.
Q. And then did you hear something?
A. The phone rang.
Q. Did you have a conversation with someone?
A. Yes.
Q. And after you had that conversation with someone, what did you do?
A. I ran downstairs.
Q. Where did you go?
A. To 82-62 Austin Street.
Q. Again, is that in the rear of the building?
A. Yes.
Q. There is a doorway there?
A. Yes.
Q. Is there and apartment that goes up?
A. There are two apartments there.
Q. Upstairs.
A. Yes.
Q. Now, you went to 82-62. and what did you see, please?
A. I saw Kitty Genovese laying down; she was stretched out in the hall.

Q. Now, with relation to the door and the first step going up, where was Kitty Genovese? Was her head toward the stairs, or was her head towards the door?
A. Her head was toward the door.

Q. Was she alive?
A. Yes, she was.

A. No, she didn't; she was just moaning. I was talking to her.

Q. Did you - did the police come there?
A. Yes, they did.
Q. And did an ambulance come there?
A. Yes.
Q. Detectives come there?
A. Yes.
Q. And was she taken away -
A. Yes.
Q. - by the ambulance?
A. Yes, she was.
Q. Was she still alive when you saw her?
A. Yes, she was.
Q. Did you see her being taken - being -
A. (Interrupting) Put on the stretcher.
Q. Put in the ambulance?
A. No, I saw her on the stretcher going into the ambulance around the corner.
