83rd Avenue

This is 83rd Avenue looking north from Abingdon Road. The c. 1910 photograph shows the old Richmond Hill Golf Club House before it was moved down Audley Street. A century ago, the view here was quite spectacular.
"The club house . . . is situated upon a knoll, which affords views of the sea on the south and the sound on the north. The Navesink and Fire Island lights may be seen at night. The towers of the Cathedral at Garden City are visible to the east and those of the Roman Catholic Cathedral of New York to the northwest. This is perhaps the only point from which both can be seen. A reverend gentleman who has resided for many years at Richmond Hill states that he has seen the Catskill Mountains from [there]."
