The First Church

The community's first church was to have been the nondenominational Roosevelt Church of Kew Gardens, named after the late Teddy Roosevelt. Although construction was planned for early 1919, nothing came of the project. In 1926, the property at the corner of Lefferts Avenue and Kew Gardens Road was acquired for a planned English Gothic style Church and Community House [see 1927 illustration] - quite different from what was actually built there in 1928.
