118th Street

This is 118th Street looking north toward Metropolitan Avenue. Here, the photographer is standing just south of today's Curzon Road. The contrast between these two photographs is striking and illustrates the ongoing conflict between community preservation and community development. Although parts of 118th Street still have the sidewalk elevated several feet above street level, the Victorian houses, and spacious front lawns are long gone. Perhaps more than any other side street in Kew Gardens, 118th Street has lost the garden community ambiance that its founders, the Man Family, intended.
