Richmond Hill outside of London, England c. 1828.

"In 1868 Albon Platt Man, a Manhattan lawyer, was attracted by this wooded slope, with its splendid views and rich farm acres, and bought the Lefferts Farm and also the Welling, Bergen, Hendricksen and Robertson Farms . . . Mr. Man knew and loved the beautiful town of Richmond Hill in England, with its wide views, and decided to name this property after this town, also honoring [landscape architect] Edward Richmond, so Richmond Hill it became. Unfortunately, Mr. Richmond soon died, but Mr. Man carried on alone . . . ."
