Looking north on Church (118th) Street in Richmond Hill, NY. Notice the horse drawn carriage coming down the street |
"Once [Albon Platt Man and Edward Richmond] had the lay-out mapped, they began to cut streets through. . . . The plan was most attractive . . . . The LIRR put up a fine station, the P.O. was opened in 1872, the first little church, the Church of the Resurrection, was built on land that [Albon Platt Man] gave . . . and as every street was laid out, both sides were planted with trees. The streets were named after them, Beech, Walnut, Oak, Maple, Elm. . . . The street with the first church was Church Street. Houses began to spring up, schools and stores to open, water and gas lines run."
