January 2003 Guest Book

I lived at 110 81st Ave. for 20 years. They were very good years. So good, that I felt actual sorrow and pity for anyone who did not grow up in New York City. It was that good then. I used the Union Turnpike station on the IND line (E and F trains) to commute to Rhodes Prep, at 5th ave and 54th st. I remember almost all my neighbors on the street, went to PS 99 for 5 years. Saul Marantz lived on the corner of 81st and Austin St. The Dutch Elm blight caused all of the great elm trees to be c [Ed.'s Note: Post rec'd with this part missing.]
More memories available on request, as I am not writing a book, just yet. By the way, before zipcodes, we were in "zone 15". In Elvis's "Return to sender" he says "no such number, no such zone". Now you know where that came from.

I love this site. It's so informative. My husband and his family have lived here for thirty years. We live on the corner of Metropolitan Avenue and Park Lane South (116-40). If anyone has any information about our building, please let us know. From what we understand, this was the first building built in this area. However, we can't find any info. Then again, we are considered to be on the Richmond Hill side of the line. Keep up the great work!!!

What a great site! I graduated from P.S.99 in 1963 and moved with my family to Michigan. I return every once in awhile to soak in the atmosphere and have a "slice" at Danny's. I often wonder what happened to my classmates. Would love to hear from them.

I grew up in Kew Gardens, 1941-1956; attended P.S. 99, lived at 114 Newbold Place, later 82nd Road. I went to junior high school 73 (William Cowper) in Maspeth because they had "S.P.", doing 3 years in two. Later, Forest Hills High. As an adult I've been a writer, of novels & non-fiction books (& articles.) Who are YOU? And why did you create this site?

My family and I have had such a great time "returning to Kew Gardens", thanks to this website. Thank you for bringing back such wonderful memories of the "big and little park", Dani's, Frankie, Mr. Softee and Wonderland! Although we've lived in many places in the U.S., I've always believed N.Y., specifically, K.G. was a great place to be from! I went to P.S. 90, Russell Sage, and R.H.H.S.,and lived in the Arden Terrace on 118th street. I had a wonderful bunch of friends from the building.

Editor's Note: There is a new web site opening which, within the next 2 weeks or so, promises to post a large number of pictures of Kew Gardens (and other Queens locales) taken during the years 1940 - 1960. The site is Queenspix.com. I have not seen these pictures, but I have been told by someone involved with the site that they are clear and razor sharp.

Hey all you KG graduates. So Now that I turned on some of my friends to this site, it seems people are connecting. Any body live in Austin Texas? I am younger (yeah baby) than Larry,Candy and the others. I remember waitng in the Roger Williams "lobby" to go to school. We would hang out and take the bus in front of Mr. Bees.(5&10)My only name of a school teacher at 99 was Miss Rice. She was hot!!!

It's me Candace or Candy Henschel. My sisters name was Kim. My Mom & Dad were Gloria & Ed or Edgar Henschel. We lived in the Texas Building & then moved across the street to the Roger Williams on Austin Street. I went to PS99. Then my family moved to the Kennedy House on Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills. We were one of the few families that were able to move in even before its completion. I graduated from Forest Hills High School in 69'. Anyways, I am still in touch with friends from KG & FH. I look forward to hearing from all my friends & acquaintances :-) to take a trip down memory lane. "You can take the girl outta Kew Gardens but you can't take Kew Gardens outta the girl" :-) I am a proud Kew Gardenite!!! Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] & be sure to put a proper subject line 2 get my attention cause otherwise you can end up as a DELETE....lol. Here's wishing all of my "HOMIES" a HAPPY, HEALTHY & SAFE 2003 NEW YEAR :-) Take care.

I was born in 1958 in Kew Gardens and spent many years eating Danny's Pizza, enjoying stickball, stoopball, trecking to Bernieland, Ziggies and Bodners for egg creams, and the "big park" and "little park" and all the other memorable activities. I left to discover life beyond NYC in 1979 with two of my neighborhood buddies. I have really enjoyed rediscovering the wonderful qualities of this unique neighborhood.

As a former Kew Gardens resident, having grown up in KG from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s, I have to say, bravo. What a great site. I lived at the Texas Apartments, 83-40 Austin St. (at Lefferts Bl.) I now live in Los Angeles, but the site brings back all the memories:
  • Frankie the Good Humor Man
  • Gussie' s Candy Store (Those wonderful Cherry Cokes)
  • Mr B of Barry's 5 & Dime
  • Dani's Pizza Place - the best pizza in the world, where we able to buy two slices and a coke for 50.
  • PS 99 and the schoolyard, a home away from home.
The memories go on. The sections on Kitty Genovese is especially moving. I remember going to school (PS 99) early one morning. I was on safety patrol (crossing guard) . Walking up Austin St., I noticed all the police cars. It was the morning after the killing. I recall seeing her blooding handprints on the store windows on Austin St. I also witnessed the puddle of blood in the doorway where her body was found. A scene that has always haunted me. Anyone wanting to go down memory lane and share some of these experiences, send an email.
