i remember it was real cold, it was snowing very lightly-big flakes, the kind you can stick your tongue out and catch them. yeah, thats what we were doing, we had finish our work, the carriage was filled with papers and magazines we had collected from homes around the homestead hotel. this was 1944, the war was on, the big war, my brother nick who was four years old was holding on to the side of the carrage walking along with me, i was nine and we were on our way home the tie up the papers and deliver them the the CDVO office the next evening. as we turned the corner where the tree had grown and captured the metal bar we heard the chimes from the first church of kew gardens up on the top of lefferts. they were playing silent night, we stopped and listened for a while, it was quiet, you know how it gets when the snow begins to fall, we sang with the chimes(i was in the church choir)and just stood by that big ole tree till the song finished. beleive it or not we collected over 5,000 lbs of papers for the CDVO and i received a pin from civilian defense for our work. we collected paper all over kew gardens, people used to save them for us until we returned. i lost that pin in a snow ball fight, but i'll never forget that night and the chimes from Rev. mallory's church, the first church of kew gardens.

This site worth every second you spend visiting it. Although called "A Picture History of Kew Gardens", the site reveals much more than that. It is a wonderful history source, an amazing photo collection, and more than all much soul and passion. Thank you for generously sharing a bit of yourself with the unknown visitor.

I will always have fond memories of my childhood and being fortunate to grow up in Kew Gardens. I stumbled upon the site by accident. It was wonderful taking a trip down memory lane and, while glancing through the guestbook, I found a posting from my friend's sister Candy Henschel. Her sister Kim and I were good friends and I used to watch her at ballet class on Saturday mornings. I attended P.S.99 from 1960-1966. Mr. Feingold was the Principal at the time. One of my favorite teachers back then was Mrs. Greenberg. I lived above the old "Pub Restaurant", which was located on the corner of 82nd Avenue and Queens Boulevard, across the street from the Court House. My father was the chef there. The proprietor was Joseph Vogel. We eventually moved to Forest Hills in 1972 when my father relocated to their other restaurant "The Stratton" on Queens Boulevard. I attended Russell Sage J.H.S. and, because of zoning, attended Jamaica High School. Kew Gardens will always remain a part of me. You can't find that quaint neighborhood feeling anymore. I loved those grand homes with the manicured lawns. My best friend, Denise Leamen, lived in the corner house on 82nd Avenue and Kew Gardens Road, directly next door lived the Hertz family and Dr. Forrest lived next door to them. I believe the house on the next corner across from P.S.99 was owned by Mrs. Bolmer. The kids were afraid of her, especially during Halloween. I spent many good times at Gussies candy store (the best cherry soda's and egg creams), Danni's Pizza is legendary, Chicken Delight by the laundromat, the Old Homestead had the best strudel and German potato salad, Barry's 5 & 10, the Austin Street Theatre kept us out of Mom's hair with triple features, the furrier across the street used to give us mink tails and I bought my comic books at the newsstand next door, Gray's bicycle shop used to fix our flats for free. My mom would shop at Bohack's where she would buy Duz? laundry detergent and each box would contain part of set to gold wheat trimmed dishes. We bought our shoes at Buster Brown and every Saturday my Mom would have her hair done at the beauty parlor on the same strip. Crossroad Drugstore on the corner of Queens Blvd. and Kew Gardens Road had the soda fountain with the best lime rickies. I met the cast of McHale's Navy at the RKO Theatre in Richmond Hill and spent many days living at the Richmond Hill library. Forest Park was the best park - I think everyone had a claim on that big rock and I loved lining up for noc-hockey. I used to take my sister to the roller skating rink (I believe it was down Kew Gardens Road/Metropolitan Avenue?) Halloween was my favorite holiday. When my father passed away in 1973 we decided to place him at Maple Grove Cemetery near the pond where I used to feed the swans. It saddens me going back. So much has changed, but I have wonderful memories of a wonderful childhood. I was pretty shy in school. I don't know if anyone remembers me. My name was Dianne Chen. I'd love to hear from my old grade school friends. You can email me at

I live in what is now called Hampton Court. When I moved here in the late 1970's the name was Kent Manor. We had three generations of the family living here at that time. The gradfather was one of the first to move into these biuldings. We are located at one of the highest points near Overlook Park. My windows used to see the World Trade Center which made a wonderful evening shot of the sunset. Thanks for the great website.

MY FAMILY MOVED TO KEW GARDENS WHEN I WAS 7 YEARS OLD AND WE LIVED THERE FROM 1947 TILL 1965 IN THE HAMPTON APT. HOUSE LOCATED AT 82nd RD & QUEENS BLVD. I GRADUATED PS99 IN 1954(AS THE BOY LEAST LIKELY TO READ A BOOK) WHICH WAS THE LAST 8th GRADE GRADUATING CLASS, HENRIETTA A. OLIVER WAS THE PRINCIPAL AND THE BEST TEACHER IN THE SCHOOL WAS MRS. FULLER. MY 2nd HOME WAS THE PS99 SCHOOLYARD WHICH SADLY IS ONLY THERE IN NAME ONLY BEING TRANSFORMED FROM ITS FORMER GLORY A LONG TIME AGO. I AM IN TOUCH WITH MANY EARLY KEW GARDENS RESIDENTS AND WITHOUT EXCEPTION THEY SAY IT WAS A MAGICAL PLACE TO COME OF AGE. JOE IS FOREVER IN OUR GRADITUDE FOR CREATING THIS SITE AND PRESERVING OUR MEMORIES. I AM OFFICIALLY A SENIOR CITIZEN BUT IT SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY I WENT TO THE AUSTIN MOVIE HOUSE FOR THE CHILDS PRICE OF 12 CENTS!

Although I was born and raised in Richmond Hill from 1946 till 1973,I eventually moved into an apartment in Kew Gardens and lived there till 1985.I then moved to Manhattan where I have lived ever since.I totally enjoyed Kew Gardens, especially the Regents Row,Forest Park and seeing the flight attendants going to and from the airports.I still like to go back and walk through both Richmond Hill and Kew Gardens which stimulates many earlier memories.Great website!

Hi! What a wonderful idea. I lived on Grenfel (corner Union Turnpike)from 1942 until 1955 and then moved to 80th Road for the following five years. In 1959 we moved to Kew Gardens Lane, Forest Hills and stayed there forever!
