The Georgian House

Along with Hampton Court, the Georgian House is one of the most prestigious apartment buildings in Kew Gardens. It faces 84th Avenue on the northwest corner of Lefferts Boulevard. I suspect the building was named after an elegant Georgian style mansion (shown here) which once occupied the site. The mansion belonged to the Fowler family (descendants of one of the founders of Richmond Hill) and was built to replace an earlier one that burned down shortly after the Fowlers bought the property. Because the area is now so built up, I had to take the 2002 photograph from Lefferts Boulevard looking north. That is a slightly different perspective than the c. 1905 photograph which was taken from 84th (Division) Avenue looking northeast.
