The Fleischmann House

This is not, as I had thought, the home of yeast king, Charles Fleischmann. He died 15 years before Kew Gardens was born. A 1922 - 25 Kew Gardens directory lists it as the home of Joseph Fleischman, a florist. And in fact, old maps show there was a greenhouse on the west end of the property.  The mansion was razed in 1939 and the Beverly House Apartments went up in its place - but only after an unsuccessful lawsuit by area residents to stop their construction.
