Crystal Lake did not go quietly. Well into the 1980's, 70 years after it was drained, store owners along Austin Street continued to suffer periodic flooding in their basements - no doubt caused by the underground spring that had fed old Crystal Lake.
The End of Crystal Lake

Construction of the new Long Island Railroad tracks meant the end of Crystal Lake. The old tracks formed a giant semi-circle as they curved over to and then away from today's Queens Boulevard and Union Turnpike. The new tracks would eliminate that curve, taking a direct route through the site of Crystal Lake. The lake had existed since the end of the Ice Age. Now it was drained to accommodate both the new rails and the new station house.
