83rd Avenue

Three things to be found in abundance on today's 118th Street south of Metropolitan Avenue are people, apartment buildings, and cars - all of which are missing from this sepia tone photograph of those same streets.  Eighty years ago, you could fire a cannon up Metropolitan Avenue or down 118th Street at high noon and not hit anyone or anything. Hidden behind the trees on the left hand side of the street in the circa 1920 picture was the home of Alrick Man, the founder of Kew Gardens.   Behind the trees on the right is the old Kimber House.  Like the peace and quiet depicted in the vintage photograph, all of the homes on this block are now just distant memories.
