Kew Gardens General Hospital
More than 50 years ago, freelance photographer, Mary Eleanor Browning, made photographic and medical history at the Kew Gardens General Hospital when she became the first patient ever to photograph her own surgery. Using a Rolleiflex camera and overhead mirror, Browning took 72 shots during the 90 minute hysterectomy. Pictures and an essay of the event were published in the June 1951 issue of Popular Photography.
