The Austin Arms

The Austin Arms Apartment House used to be called the West Virginia.  It stands on Austin Street across from Mowbray Drive along the New York bound side of the Long Island Railroad tracks.  Before its construction in the 1950's, that strip of land served as a park. In the black and white picture, the photographer is standing by the Long Island Railroad parking lot looking west. The 82nd Avenue bridge over the Long Island Railroad tracks can be seen just left of center. The house in the distance had been the home of humorist, Will Rogers .
